People In Music History
Vaughan Williams, Ralph (1872-1958) English composer, pupil of Stanford, Bruch
(in Berlin), and Ravel (in Paris). Close associate of Holst; much influenced by
English folk music, some of which he collected and arranged. Based his Sinfonia
Antartica (symphony no. 7) on his score for the film Scott of the Antarctic,
and brought out his last symphony (no. 9) at the age of 85. He numbered only
the last, identifying the others by key or by name. Other works include operas
Hugh the Drover, Riders to the Sea, Pilgrim's Progress, Sir John in Love;
ballet Job; many choral works; Serenade to Music, originally for 16 solo voices
and orchestra; orchestral works with solo instruments, including Floscampi, The
Lark Ascending, Romance (harmonica solo), tuba concerto; Fantasia on a Theme of
Tallis for strings; Latin mass; hymns, including For All the Saints; 2 string
quartets; songs, including Linden Lea and cycle On Wenlock Edge. Also
conductor, especially choral, and hymnbook editor. O.M., 1935.
